Creating QR Codes

Dentists4Kids can create a QR Code for you usually within one business day for only $25. However, we want to make the process easy for you as well, if you decided to do it on your own. This guide will walk you through creating your very own QR code that can be used on any printed material.

1. What is a QR Code?

A QR Code is very simply a type of of bar code that is readable by smart phones. A simple app can be downloaded to scan these codes which then links you to a website, video or text. If it is on the web chances are you can probably link to it.

The first step is finding out what it is you want to link to. Do you want people to see your Dental Topics or Contest Page? What about linking to your Google Reviews page? You can even link to your Facebook page to get them to “Like” you!

2. Getting Started

The second step is to create a short link. We will use the site Bitly, as it is probably the most popular URL shortening site on the web.

To get started, head over to Bitly’s website.

The Bitly Homepage

If you want to be able to see the progress of your QR Code you created and track it using Bitly’s built in statistics…keep reading. Otherwise, skip to step 4.

3. Signing Up for Bitly

Getting an account with Bitly can be a benefit because it lets you track and analyze the links you create. For example, you could create a brochure that provides a QR code linking to your website’s appointment request form. Then you can check the statistics on bitly.com and see how effective that code was.

  1. Click the big orange button to sign up.
  2. You may either sign in with Twitter or Facebook which only requires your existing usernames and passwords for those accounts. The alternative is creating your own account here with a username, email address and password.

The Bitly Signup Screen

That’s it for signup. Now it is time to create your short link.

4. Creating Your Short Link

To create your URL, simply copy and paste the link you want to shorten in the box that looks like the one below. If you did not create an account, it will just be the box that you saw on the home page. Click on the Shorten button.

The Shorten Links box when you are signed in.

It will now display your short link on the page. Simply copy it and send it to people!

5. Finding Your QR Code

The next step is obtaining your QR code. At this point you should see your link that is shortened on the current page. Look closely for the link that says “Info Page+” and select it. This will open up a new page with the statistics for this particular link so you can track its progress.

Note: If you chose to not create an account, not all of these options are available to you. Fortunately, the Info Page is still accessible to get your QR code.

On this page you will see your little QR code image on the right hand side. Do the following to download it.

  1. Click the image. It will open up larger in another window.
  2. Right click (or Ctrl + Click on a Mac) and select “Save Image As…”
  3. Choose a location to save the image and you’re done! You now have a PNG version of your QR code that can be sent to a printer or used to print on your own personal materials.

Notice the location of the QR Code on the right side of the Info Page+

That is the easiest way to make yourself a QR code. Again, we offer the service for only $25 if you decide you’d rather have us do it for you.

Send us an email to info@dentists4kids.com with the link you want shortened and we will create one with a QR code. You may also send us a custom shortened URL name that you prefer. such as bit.ly/doctorname and we can make that for you as well.
